Located in the oldest engineering college in Northern India, formerly Thomason College of Engineering, the Director’s Office at IIT Roorkee represents over 165 years of institutional heritage. Over time, the space had been repeatedly altered and retrofitted to meet functional needs, and it had developed signs of distress such as vertical cracks and deterioration of jack-arched roofs. This pilot project adopted a conservation approach to stabilize and restore the Director’s Office, transforming it into a contemporary workplace while preserving its historic fabric. The work included documentation, condition assessment, and preparation of a framework to guide future retrofitting, restoration, and adaptive reuse across the campus.
